Opportunity International Savings & Loans Limited (Opportunity Ghana) is a non bank financial institution which was licensed by the Central Bank of Ghana in 2004 to operate in savings and loans. Opportunity Ghana was born of the belief that a transformational, formal financial institution was needed to make a lasting economic impact on the entrepreneurial poor in Ghana. In 2001, the Opportunity International Network initiated a strategy to convert Sinapi Aba Trust, its NGO partner operating in Ghana since 1994, into a formal financial institution. Three branches were subsequently transferred in exchange for shares. A license to begin business in savings and loans was granted by the Bank of Ghana in June 2004. The first branch was opened in Kumasi in September 2004, followed by Accra in August 2005, and Techiman in December 2005. Within 3 years of operations, Opportunity Ghana currently serves over 100,000 loans and deposit clients across Ghana with 10 bank branches. Opportunity Ghana currently holds a loan portfolio of US$21millon and a deposit portfolio of US$11million. Opportunity Ghana serves micro and small entrepreneurs with Loans, Deposits, Insurance and Fund Transfer Services. Their products and services are built on values of respect, commitment to the poor, integrity and stewardship and are developed on the basis of expressed needs of the economically challenged in society.
