Daan sa Pag-unlad, Inc. (DSPI), which means “way to progress,” was formed in November 1994 by a group of businessmen, clergy and lay people living in Bataan. DSPI focuses its assistance to clients who are not served by the banking system. Many of them do not have collateral and their loan requirements are relatively small. Some 55% of clients hover on the poverty line, 20% live below the poverty line and the rest just a little bit above the poverty line. About 90% of all clients are women. Close to 75 % are engaged in merchandising (i.e., buy and sell, fish vending, direct selling). About 20% are into small businesses (small eatery, food processing, hog raising) and less than 5% are in small-scale manufacturing.
