Opportunity International (China)

Opportunity International's implementing partner in China was initially funded through Opportunity International Australia in 2003. Opportunity International China helps to transform lives by providing poor entrepreneurs with microbusiness loans, training, and business consulting services that enable them to develop and sustain income-generating enterprises which create jobs for the unemployed.

Opportunity International China's mission is to grow businesses, create jobs, and transform lives. The high repayment rate of loans and its sustainable business model are achieved through a systematic approach of risk assessment and management as well as follow-up client training and professional coaching services. Opportunity International China has three companies operating in China, namely Opportunity International China Anhui, Opportunity International China Jiangxi, and the newly established OI China (Suyu) Micro Credit Company in Jiangsu Province.

Not only are these businesses growing at 44.6% with above break-even results, the number of jobs created and sustained through microloan guarantee businesses reached 6,277 in 2008. Wholesalers and retailers are 50% of the client base, as the transmigrants move to the capital cities to pursue a better education for their children. Small workshops and manufacturers are 22% percent, and 6% are agricultural clients and others are engaged in animal husbandry.

In September 2008, Opportunity International China was granted a microcredit licence so it can provide microloans of approximately US$300 - US$400 directly to help the rural poor from 2009.
