Opportunity Microcredit Romania (OMRO)

With over 1,300 clients at the end of 2005, Opportunity Microcredit Romania (OMRO) offers group loans to people with household incomes well below UNDP’s poverty line of US$4 per day. OMRO started lending activities in December 2000 in the heart of Transylvania as a pioneer in the field of microlending in Romania. OMRO’s mission is to help the poorest entrepreneurs, mostly women, by supporting them to develop their businesses through credit, training and advice. Loans are also given to individual clients who live just above the poverty line but have no access to credit. They usually work as vendors in open markets. Loans are also given to individual clients with slightly larger businesses who are unable to borrow through the formal banking sector. Although these clients may be just above the poverty line, their businesses generally create jobs for one to five people who live below it.
