Oportunidad LatinoAmerica Colombia was originally established in Bogotá in 1993 as a branch office of Opportunity International's oldest Partner, AGAPE, based in Barranquilla, Colombia. Just one year later, Oportunidad LatinoAmerica had separated from AGAPE and established itself as an independent partner in Ciudad Bolivar, a large slum district near the southern border of the city. Known for its extreme poverty and high levels of street violence, Ciudad Bolivar was considered an excellent candidate for microenterprise intervention. Convinced that money alone cannot transform lives, Oportunidad LatinoAmerica offers training in human relations, entrepreneurship, spiritual issues, communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, community participation and projects, self-esteem, values and stewardship, and parent-child relations. This training is designed to help clients learn to prosper on their own, without becoming credit dependent.
