Holistic Transformation

When microfinance “works,” poverty-alleviation numbers rise, along with return on equity, program sustainability and other economic indicators. But Opportunity’s commitment to the poor extends beyond financial services to client transformation in all areas of their lives, including social and spiritual aspects. This sets Opportunity apart from most other microfinance institutions — the recognition that touching the whole person creates the potential for more permanent growth.

“We believe that just to help people with their business is wonderful,” explains Dennis Ripley, senior vice president for programs for Opportunity International. “They’ll increase their own incomes for their families, and they’ll create jobs for their neighbors. But we have a unique chance to then add two more types of capital to their lives.”

Transformation begins in Trust Groups, through training that addresses every aspect of family life, community life and business life. The Women’s Opportunity Fund developed more than 400 training modules, which are now part of its Transformation Library. These training modules cover the gamut of economic, social and spiritual arenas, including: health, leadership, self-esteem, gender awareness, communication, work-life balance, civic responsibility and more.

Implementing partners are trained to use the Transformation Library and incorporate sessions into their Trust Group meetings.

In Africa, Opportunity employs AIDS/Transformation coordinators who provide specialized training, link clients to services provided by local social-service agencies, and manage strategic partnerships that support AIDS orphans.

Every day, in thousands of locations worldwide, the Opportunity International Network helps transform lives — economically, socially and spiritually. This holistic transformation is a vital component of Opportunity’s microfinance programs — empowering clients to become agents for their own freedom and growth.
