Who can apply for the 10,000 Women Emerging Leaders Programme?

Women aged 21 - 30 who are in their final year of study at a selected university and who are interested in a career in microfinance. Please see our criteria page for a complete list of applicant requirements.

Do I have to be a current student at university?

Yes. Only students who have begun their final year of study are eligible to apply for the programme.

What are the benefits of the programme?

The Emerging Leaders Programme provides participants with:

  • a subsidised internship at a local microfinance partner;
  • an all-expense paid, 4-week management training programme at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya;
  • employment in an Opportunity International microfinance bank or other participating microfinance institution.

What are the responsibilities?

Participants must commit to successfully completing each stage of the programme and to a period of employment with the selected partner.

Application

How can I apply for the programme?

You must apply for the programme online. Hand written, faxed or mailed applications will not be accepted. Please click on the link below and complete the application electronically.

When will the selections for the programme be made?

Specific election dates will be announced for each university. All selection for the 2009/2010 year should be completed by 31 March 2009.

How will I be notified of the results?

Students who are accepted into the programme will receive written notification no later than 31 March 2009. Specific dates will be announced as necessary.

Internship/Employment

What microfinance organisation will I complete my internship with?

The final announcement for internship placement will be made at least one month prior to the internship period. All participants will serve the internship period in a partner in their local country and region.

Is the internship paid?

Yes. All interns will receive a subsidy for the time served as interns.

What microfinance organisation will I be employed by?

The final announcement for employment will be made at least one month prior to placement. All participants will be employed in a partner in their local country and region.

Training

Where will the management training be held?

The management development training will be held at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya. Please visit the Strathmore University website at www.strathmore.edu to learn more about the facilities.

When is the management training scheduled?

The management training is scheduled to be held in January 2010.

How long will the management training be?

The management training will be for a period of four full weeks.

What expenses are covered for the management training?

All travel, travel documents, accommodation, meals and course materials will be paid for by the Emerging Leaders programme. Please see the Terms & Conditions page for additional details on the expenses covered.
