10,000 Women Emerging Leaders Programme
In order to apply and be accepted into the programme, applicants must meet the requirements listed below and be willing to support the mission of Opportunity International (included below).
The requirements will be verified with university records where necessary.
An applicant who does not meet these requirements will be disqualified from the selection process.

Applicant Requirements
- Female
- 20 - 30 years of age
- Fluency in English
- Entering final year of study at University in a banking-related field.
- Top 20% of class in course of study (based on overall grades).
- Consistently excellent academic performance (classroom assignments etc.)
- Perfect attendance record for previous academic year: no absences from classes unless for a documented, grave reason (accident, illness, etc.).
- Excellent record of conduct for all previous years of study.
- Active extra-curricular activities showing leadership and involvement beyond the classroom
- Commitment to the development of her country.
- Proactive, dedicated, hard-working, respectful.
- Interest in microfinance/banking sector.
Terms & Conditions
In order to be accepted into the programme, all participants must agree to the following terms and conditions and be willing to sign an official contract confirming this agreement.
- Participant agrees to a 1-2 month working internship during a school holiday at a pre-selected microfinance bank/institution located in their home country.
- Participant will be available to attend a 4 week certificate training programme to be held at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya in January, 2010, following her successful completion of an internship and graduation from her university.
- Failure to successfully complete any one stage may lead to dismissal from the programme and an obligation to repay a percentage of the money invested.
- Participant will commit to an employment contract with Opportunity International or another participating microfinance partner in her home country for a minimum period of one to two years.
- A participant who voluntarily leaves this position prior to the completion of the agreed upon period will be liable for the repayment of a percentage of the total investment made on her behalf - including the internship subsidy, travel and training expenses.
- Participant must sign a written contract indicating acceptance of all terms, prior to acceptance into the programme.
Benefits
All participants will be guaranteed the benefits listed below, assuming successful completion of each stage of the programme:
- All travel costs to and from Kenya will be paid by the programme, as necessary, including:
- Airline or bus tickets;
- Passport, visa, travel documents;
- Required vaccinations for entry into Kenya;
- Transfers to and from the airport in Nairobi to Strathmore University.
- Room and board
- Three daily meals plus morning/afternoon teas during work days
- Supervised accommodation in student dormitories at Strathmore University.
- All course materials as necessary for 4 Week training.
- A tailored, intensive, management preparation course designed to the highest standards and delivered by microfinance and university professionals and approved by Opportunity International and the Goldman Sachs Charitable Foundation.
